Review "The Last Christmas"

Dr Who's Christmas tradition is back with a brand new episode, "The Last Christmas". In the past most Christmas episodes are kinda light and uneventful except for last year's special, when we said "Goodbye" to Matt Smith. This year's special, it seems that Steven Moffat went for light, humorous and then scares the daylights out of us.

"The Last Christmas" is Dr who meets Aliens meets Inception. They even make a joke about this when after the Doctor learns that we have a movie called "Alien", he remarks that no wonder everyone tries to invade us. Easily the best line of the whole episode. The alien in this episode is a creature called a "Dream Crab". these things are down right scary. I'm talking about the checking under the bed before you sleep kind of scary. A creature that sucks out your brain. It's a pretty bold choice for a Christmas episode.

The other positive thing about this episode is Nick Frost. Who doesn't like Nick Frost? His portrayal of Santa Claus is excellent. This isn't your Miracle on 34th street kind of Santa. He is an action star with the usual kind of witty intelligence we expect from a Nick Frost played character. The nice thing is that Santa is not the story, it's the dream crabs. It was nice of Moffat to stick with the story and not give into temptation and make it all about the Doctor and Santa.

The only thing I did not like was that the story was implausible. 6 random dream crabs start sucking on peoples faces and Clara and the Doctor just happen to be 2 of the 6? Come on. And then Doctor looked it he was on another planet or time, when the dream crab got him. I kept having to tell myself to not think too deeply about the story and enjoy it, but it was hard to do. The other negative thing about the episode was supposed to be a positive one. We were going to see Clara leave the Doctor for good. I was already for the tear jerking moment and the end. Then, the climax and......now Clara is staying with the Doctor. :( What? I'm so ready for Clara to move on. She's not an interesting character and never was. But I guess some people out there like her.

Overall, I give "The Last Christmas" a 3.5 out of 5 Tardis's. Now that we have seen Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Dr Who, can we see them in the same episode? Wouldn't that be lovely?
